The deadline for submissions to D|N|A was December 15th 2010. We received some superb proposals – over fifty in total – to our CFP ( here in English et français). We are now finalizing the program and informing applicants of the outcome of our selection process, which proved to be very challenging! And, as soon as we have the program sorted we will post it here.

Ce symposium interdisciplinaire inclura des présentations, tables rondes, projections, expositions ainsi qu’un atelier Korsakow visant à rassembler des théoriciens, spécialistes, artistes, curateurs et programmateurs se spécialisant dans ce champ de recherche. Nous visons également à promouvoir des discussions, des échanges créatifs ainsi que des débats tout en stimulant et provoquant un engagement créatif/productif envers la communauté avant, durant et après le symposium. Les organisations et individus participants seront ainsi impliqués dans différentes activités servant de points d’entrée et de sortie pour le symposium.

Nous recherchons principalement des propositions innovatrices et engageantes adressant les champs suivants, mais nous sommes aussi ouverts à d’autres propositions pertinentes :

- engagement critique envers des œuvres existantes et/ou artistes
- l’auditoire en tant que communauté et vice versa
- engagement théorique sur le concept de l’auteur, l’interactivité, les bases de données et les archives multimédia
- précurseurs historiques (cinéma utilisant de multiples écrans; livres dont vous êtes le héro)
- différents types de média utilisant la non-fiction : archivage, entrevue/histoire orale, témoignages, ethnographique.

Interview: Florian Thalhofer on his creative approach

In June 2010, Jacqueline Wallace, a member of the CINER-G research team, interviewed Korsakow inventor Florian Thalhofer by email about his creative and philosophical approach to Korsakow filmmaking. They touched on some of Florian’s current projects, some of them involving other creators.

JW: You’ve now created numerous K-films. How do you approach each new film? What is your creative process and how has it changed or evolved over the years? Do you work by a set of guiding principles or creative intentions?

florian-thalhoferFT: When I start a new project I try to forget everything that I know about it. I try to push my own opinions into the background and look at things from the viewpoint of the people that I talk to; to think their thoughts. I try to make my own thinking-process accessible, talking about my thoughts, associations, and sometimes memories that are triggered by what I hear and see from the people I talk to. The technical process of the making of the film is also part of the project. The recording devices might get into the image, or the protagonist moves out of the frame, to make clear there is a camera that is recording this situation. There is a person behind the camera. What you see here happened, but it might have happened differently if there was no camera. I talk about the technical process, the things that happen behind the scenes.

I don’t want to claim that what I am showing is the truth. I don’t believe in truth. Every individual develops his or her own sense of reality. It is a human need to exchange ideas about reality. We can learn so much from other peoples’ views because other peoples’ eyes see things from a different angle. Another person might see options and possibilities that you—from your point of view—cannot see. This is even more so, when you talk to people from another culture or background. The further that somebody is away from your own thinking, the more radical the options you get for your own life, but also the more difficult it is to get a clear picture of what the person “really” means. It is like looking at a sculpture: you see what you see from your angle. When you talk to someone right next to you about what he sees, you can imagine it quite well. But when you talk to someone at the other side of the sculpture and he describes what he sees, it is hard for you to imagine exactly what he sees. But of course the view from the other side tells you so much more about the sculpture. Of course, I am not looking at sculptures, I try to look at life. ;-)

JW: Korsakow is an open source technology. What was the philosophy behind this path and what is your vision for getting other K-filmmakers engaged? What other new technologies or devices do you see might intersect with Korsakow in the future (e.g. iPad, other devices?).

FT: A Korsakow-film needs a computer to be played. All of the new platforms that deliver film-like formats can be computer-based. Excellent delivery-platforms for Korsakow-films are computer-based and interactive by nature. There are two main reasons why people still like the idea of watching a linear movie on an iPad or another computer-driven device: it is because we all grew up with this concept; with this way of linear thinking. This is why most people still enjoy linear films. And of course, there is a big film industry out there at the peak of its power, producing and designing carefully crafted linear films, employing huge teams of people. The biggest budget for a Korsakow-film—to my knowledge—was around 25,000 Euro, and the project was basically done by a team of two. Most Korsakow-films are no-budget or super-low-budget. Interestingly, there are more and more people very seriously using Korsakow, because more and more people feel a need to use an alternative way of story telling.

I started to make the Korsakow software 10 years ago without getting distracted by the thoughts of how to deliver these films to an audience. When I sent the first Korsakow-film (Das Korsakow-Syndrom) to festivals, I sent it on hard-drives. Now of course the main distribution platform is the internet. At the time Korsakow started, it needed quite a vision to imagine a world of broadband-internet. I did not have that vision, I simply did not care… ;-). Today it is not even a problem to stream high-quality video to mobile devices. This is amazing. All these new platforms feel like they were invented for the distribution of Korsakow-films.

For many years I developed Korsakow on my own, but I reached my limits. I am not a professional, not even a talented programmer. I was not a good enough programmer to realize my vision. Luckily I then met Matt Soar from Concordia University. He popped up on Skype one day and asked me how I was doing with Korsakow. Korsakow is now an open-source software because this step provided the possibility to further develop Korsakow professionally, without thinking about business plans. The future will show if that was a good decision. The other option would have been to start a company and create a commercial software. But to be honest: I am a lousy businessman and there is something about money that scares me quite a bit.

JW: I see that you’re blogging about the ‘Hilfe, Freiheit!’ project? Can you tell me more about this project and your investments in it? From the blog posts I see that the subject of freedom is explored via various lenses (religion, work, school). Can you tell me more about these explorations and their significance to you as a media artist? How have you engaged audiences and what has been the reaction among participants?

FT: The question of ‘freedom’ and how we deal with it is a key question within Korsakow. Compared to film, Korsakow gives more freedom. Nevertheless you feel that there are and have to be rules. This is the same in democratic societies. Our society allows more and more freedom but within this freedom we need to create rules. On an individual level, as well as on the level of a society as a whole. Korsakow is a great format to research the topic of freedom. Over a period of almost two years we did 16 Korsakow-Shows, most of them at the Münchner Kammerspiele theatre in Munich. We—that is, mainly writer Tobias Hülswitt and myself—met many years ago in Cairo. Tobias was trying to find new ways of storytelling in his writing. He also felt the negative power of linear storytelling very strongly. We became friends in Egypt, looking at our culture from the viewpoint of Muslim society, where it became obvious that our freedom is also a burden. It needs a lot of energy, a lot of thinking and a lot of discussion to find out what you want to do with your freedom, and what it is better that you don’t do. In a more restrictive society, life is—in that sense—much more simple: you just follow the rules. My Egyptian friend Mahmoud made a convincing argument that this can be a way to lead a very happy life.

The Korsakow-Show is basically a Korsakow in a theatre. The audience is part of the piece. We prepare Korsakow-interview-films for each show where we ask “normal” people about the specific topic. The audience can then elect which clip should be played. Two experts on the particular topics are present during the show. If they want to comment on something, they press a button, a light turns on and they can then also be “selected” by the audience. The audience has the possibility to comment via text-messages and by using a microphone. There is no presenter; the audience takes over the role of the presenter. The series was very successful. We started it as an experiment. We were not sure if people would engage, but they did; every show was very different. The experts on stage also liked this direct feedback very much. There is a lot more I could say about this. It was really amazing to see that there were fundamental similarities in how a Korsakow-Film and a Korsakow-Show is perceived. It was fascinating! JW: What else are you working on now?

FT: The ARTE TV project, Planet Galata, is the biggest project I have ever done. It is a portrait of a bridge and the people working on and around that bridge in Istanbul. First, a Video-Weblog was started. Then, a Korsakow-film. Third, there will be a linear version of this Korsakow-film to be broadcast on TV.  It is a very intensive experience. First of all the project itself is complex, with all the people involved, but also the new experience of having a production-company and TV-editors that have a very different approach towards how to make a film, than I have with my approach when I make a Korsakow-film. It is almost a clash of cultures and we are all learning a lot in this project. I am now right in the middle of it, so I don’t know how I will look at it in retrospect, but at the moment I am enjoying it a lot. It is an exhausting, but very productive process. JW: Have you seen Kat Cizek’s and the National Film Board’s new project called Highrise ? The project is a veritable interactive media platform and is introducing new approaches to documentary that defy traditional definitions. What do you think?

FT: I have known Kat for many years and I very much like her projects. I just met up with her in Toronto where I learned about her new project. Kat and I are both fascinated by the possibilities of the new technologies in similar ways. I love Kat’s work because there is a clarity to it that is missing in most online-projects that try to use all the technological gadgets without really thinking why. There is no technological pink noise in her work.

JW: Where do you see interactive filmmaking and database documentaries going in the future?

FT: I don’t feel comfortable with the term “interactive filmmaking” but it would take too long to go into this now. ;-)  I think in the near future there will be no linear documentaries as we know them today. From the perspective of Korsakow, a linear film is also a Korsakow-film, it’s just one with a very special behavior. The rules of a linear film are so strict: the film plays in the same order, every time you look at it. And why should you want that?  Liebe Grüße, Florian

Thalhofer On Location In Istanbul

Florian Thalhofer, Berlin-based media artist, CINER-G collaborator, and inventor of the Korsakow system, is on location in Istanbul for the month of April where he is video blogging and composing his next K-film, A Bridge In Istanbul. In association with ARTE Television and the ‘Istanbul – A cultural meeting place’ project, Florian is filming from the Galata Bridge, where he is capturing the cultural memory of this important crossing that spans the Golden Horn. In celebration of Istanbul as the 2010 European cultural capital, the vlog captures the stories, anecdotes and reflections on the significance of the Galata Bridge as central monument and symbol of the city.

Videos, photos and commentary are available in on the vlog site in French and German. Florian will also create a “Director’s cut” of his K-film, a linear version that will include parallel storylines and anecdotes, to be televised by ARTE. The web site for the project will also include opportunities for users to upload their own videos and stories of Istanbul to create a crowdsourced-film and contribute to the celebration of this vibrant city’s cultural heritage and daily life.

NYT’s Bits Blogger on Digital Storytelling

Nick Bilton, lead writer for the New York Times’ Bits blog, presents his thoughts on how digital media has resulted in a “new form of storytelling” at the recent Pop!Tech event. He tells us that from video games to the internet, and from dumb media to smart content, new technologies and a culture of media multitasking have brought forth “a new generation of how we’re communicating and telling stories”.

Bilton has been with the NYT since 2003 and touches on some of the research and development work the news giant is doing in its lab (Bilton is the design integration editor in the R&D lab and newsroom). As the media landscape and technology advances continue to change the way news is produced and consumed, Bilton shows the visualization research that the Times is testing, which dynamically plots mobile device and home computer readership of the NYT web site on a map of the United States. The next step is attempting to correlate it to the actual content or news article that a reader is accessing, creating not only a powerful infographic but an impressive and interactive dataset as visual narrative. Another interesting concept he explores is the idea of smart content, which would, in theory, be able to intelligently map one’s personal reading activity across devices. So, if you’ve read a particular article on your laptop in the morning while having coffee, it would be hidden on your mobile phone interface when you continue your reading on the commute to work, saving valuable display space to improve and customize the experience accordingly.

Whether designing for the 1, 2 or 10-foot experience, “it’s all just storytelling”, notes Bilton, and he continues through the presentation to demonstrate both historical and, more particularly, future-looking technologies as part his work in the lab to “look two to ten years out” and as context for his upcoming book, I Live in the Future: & Here’s How It Works.

Bilton is also a designer, user interface specialist and co-founder of NYC Resistor, a Brooklyn-based hardware hacker space and self-proclaimed geekdom.

Les trames narratives numérique selon le blog Bits du NYT

Nick Bilton, l’auteur principal du blog Bits publié dans le New York Times, a fait part de son opinion lors du récent évènement Pop!Tech sur le rôle qu’ont joué les média numériques dans la création d’une « nouvelle forme de trame narrative ».  Qu’il s’agisse des jeux vidéos ou de l’internet, ou encore de média simplistes ou de contenu intelligent, il explique l’influence qu’ont eu les nouvelles technologies et la culture multimédia sur la création « d’une nouvelle génération dans la manière de communiquer et de raconter des histoires ».

Bilton est affilié au NYT depuis 2003 et adresse certains des travaux en recherches et développements effectués par le journal dans son labo (Bilton est l’éditeur d’intégration/design du labo en R&D et de la salle de presse).  Alors que les avancées technologiques et le paysage médiatique ne cessent de changer la manière dont les nouvelles sont produites et consommées, Bilton présente la recherche en visualisation testée par le Times; celle-ci illustre de manière dynamique sur une carte géographique des États-Unis la consultation du site web du NYT à partir d’ordinateur personnel ou d’appareil électronique portable.  La prochaine étape visera à créer une corrélation avec le contenu ou l’article que l’utilisateur est en train d’accéder, ce qui permettra de créer une puissante ‘infographique’ ainsi qu’une impressionnante collection de données interactives formant une narrative visuelle. Il explore aussi un autre concept intéressant, celui du contenu intelligent qui pourrait, en théorie, schématiser les activités de lecture d’une personne et ce peu importe l’appareil utilisé. Donc, si vous lisez un article à partir de votre portable le matin en prenant votre café, ce dernier sera caché sur votre interface de téléphone cellulaire lorsque vous poursuivrez votre lecture en vous rendant au travail, améliorant ainsi votre expérience en personnalisant votre contenu et sauvant l’espace de présentation.

Peu importe qu’on design pour une expérience de 1, 2 ou 10 pieds, “ce ne sont que des trames narratives”, explique Bilton alors qu’il continue sa présentation en démontrant à la fois les technologies historiques et futuristes faisant partie de son travail au laboratoire.  Ces dernières lui permettent de voir « deux à dix ans en avance » et servent aussi de contexte pour son livre I Live in the Future: & Here’s How It Works.

Bilton est aussi un designer, un spécialiste de l’interface utilisateur et le co-fondateur du NYC Resistor, un espace situé à Brooklyn pour les hackers et les ‘allumés’ de l’informatique.

What happens when documentary ventures outside traditional definitions and conventions? When directorial vantage point gives way to experiment and collaboration? Where media meets medicine?  These are some of the questions that informed my recent interview with Katerina Cizek, the National Film Board of Canada’s Filmmaker-in-Residence.

The 7 Interventions of a Filmmaker-in-Residence, recently released as a DVD box set by the NFB, is a compelling approach to documentary that mobilizes digital storytelling as a powerful tool for social action. The project reconfigures the documentary genre and chronicles Cizek’s groundbreaking work in what she describes as “interventionist media” at St. Michael’s, an inner city hospital in Toronto, where Cizek spent nearly five years embedded as filmmaker-in-residence. The resulting work is nothing short of a multimedia juggernaut and includes several films, a photo exhibit, a filmmaker’s blog, and a web documentary that exemplifies non-linear narrative and the possibilities it represents to tell the stories of real people and create real change.

Rather than a conventional mandate, Cizek proposed a more innovative approach where the medical interventions pursued would be a collaborative process, where ideas could come from anywhere—doctors, nurses, administrators, and, importantly, participants. “There would be no ‘us’ and ‘them’,” she emphasized. This was a process based on partnership, involvement and strategy with her medical colleagues, conceived together and knowing that each intervention would be an experiment that would evolve as the stories unfolded, allowing the voices, experiences and struggles to emerge. In Cizek’s words, “it was about documentary in its truest spirit of inquiry”.

Cizek drew from her experience with video advocacy and her background in human rights documentary, including her work on the film Seeing is Believing, which she co-directed with Peter Wintonick. For Cizek, the opportunity was to expand on what the NFB’s Challenge for Change had achieved in the 1960/70s by investing video advocacy models and interventionist research methods with the possibilities of new technologies. There was no specific set agenda. Projects emerged collaboratively and documentary was a method to discover new knowledge, new approaches and innovations that would contribute to interventionist research. As filmmaker-in-residence, Cizek was not there to simply observe and record, but was a full participant and part of the process of intervention.

One of the films, The Interventionists, documents Cizek’s collaboration with Toronto’s Mental Health Crisis Team, where she spent more than 80 hours shooting vérité documentary, accompanying a police officer and psychiatric nurse who are deployed to 911 calls of those in mental distress or at risk of suicide. Through compassion, care and talk the team would counsel distressed people to deescalate situations and keep those that felt alienated by the hospital system at home in their community. The film has since been screened at the World Psychiatric Association conference and is now part of metro Toronto police officer training and has inspired other jurisdictions to adopt the mental health and police partnership model.

Part way through the process Cizek wrote a Manifesto to detail the guiding principles that informed her work. It also served an important role to help educate people about a different way of doing documentary, yet communicate the approach as legitimate documentary practice. “It helped me to explain what we were doing. That we were experimenting and innovating, learning from people about their concerns and that learning together was part of the process,” she explains.

Cizek also spoke of the important precursors that influenced her work and the role of new media and technology. “We are experiencing a huge digital revolution. Seeing Is Believing documents the birth of the handycam, a technology that democratized the landscape making the tools accessible; changing media and changing documentary forever,” said Cizek.

What’s next for Cizek?

The traces of Filmmaker-in-Residence are clearly evident in her next work and ongoing commitment to non-linear narrative that mimics human interaction much more closely than conventional documentary approaches. Her newest project, Highrise, a multi-year, multi-media documentary project about the human experience in global vertical suburbs, draws from the innovative, collaborative and interventionists approaches trialed in the first project yet at a much broader scale. From the trailer we learn that it will feature “ten towers in ten suburbs in ten of the world’s most unlikely but growing cities” to collaborate and tell the stories of those living in “the concrete containers of urban life”. When I asked Cizek about this latest work, her passion for the project and for the possibilities extended by new technologies were immediately clear. “There’s something unnatural about a linear narrative feature length documentary. How do you tell the stories much more like the way we actually communicate?” she noted, and went on to explain Out My Window, part of the project shot with a new camera and panoramic technology that will feature 360 degree views from select floors of each highrise depicting the point of view of the resident, telling their story with people looking out from their own places. “There’s a humanity and intimacy; it’s emotional but respectful. This is how we actually communicate. It’s the way we learn about each other and come to better understand each other,” she states.

Out My Window is slated to launch spring 2010. Other Highrise multimedia documentary projects are underway and will roll out organically over the next few years.

Interview: Katarina Cizek

Qu’arrive t-il lorsque le documentaire s’éloigne des conventions et définitions traditionnelles?  Lorsque le point de vue du réalisateur permet l’expérimentation et la collaboration?  Lorsque les médias rencontrent la médecine?  Ces questions sont à la base de ma récente entrevue avec Katerina Cizek, la ‘Filmmaker-in-Residence’ de l’Office National du Film du Canada.

The 7 Interventions of a Filmmaker-in-Residence, qui a récemment été rendu disponible par l’ONF sous forme de coffret DVD, représente une approche fascinante du documentaire qui utilise les trames narratives numériques comme puissants outils de changement social.  Le projet redéfini le genre du documentaire et est une chronique du travail innovateur de Cizek dans ce qu’elle décrit comme étant du « média interventionniste » à l’hôpital St-Michael de Toronto où Cizek y a été intégrée pendant près de cing ans en tant que filmmaker-in-residence.  On peut décrire de colosse multimédia le travail en découlant qui inclut plusieurs films, une exposition photo, un blogue de la réalisatrice, et un documentaire web qui est un excellent exemple de trame narrative non-linéaire et des possibilités de raconter les histoires de vraies personnes et de créer de réels changements.

Au lieu d’un mandat conventionnel, Cizek a proposé une approche plus innovatrice où les interventions médicales seraient un processus collaboratif et où les idées pourraient venir de n’importe où – des docteurs, infirmières, administrateurs et participants.  Elle met l’emphase sur le fait qu’ « il n’y aura pas de ‘nous’ ni ‘d’eux’ ».  Il s’agissait d’une approche se basant sur un partenariat, une implication et une stratégie avec ses collègues médicaux, conçue de manière collaborative tout en sachant que chaque intervention serait une expérimentation qui évoluerait au fur et à mesure que les histoires se dérouleraient, permettant ainsi aux voix d’émerger au gré des expériences et conflits. Cizek explique dans ses propres mots : « c’était du documentaire dans son esprit d’enquête le plus pûr ».

Cizek s’est inspiré de son expérience avec les ‘plaidoyers vidéos’ et les documentaires touchant aux droits de l’homme, notamment son travail sur le film Seeing is Believing, qu’elle a co-réalisé avec Peter Wintonick.  Pour Cizek, il s’agissait d’une excellente opportunité de poursuivre ce que le programme de l’ONF Challenge for Change a commencé dans les années 1960/70 en alliant le modèle du ‘plaidoyer vidéo’ et les méthodes de recherche interventionnistes avec les possibilités des nouvelles technologies.  Il y avait aucun but préétablit; les projets sont apparus de manière collaborative et le documentaire était une manière de découvrir de nouvelles connaissances, de nouvelles approches et innovations qui contribueraient à la recherche interventionniste.  En tant que filmmaker-in-residence, le rôle de Cizek n’était pas de simplement observer et enregistrer ces observations, mais aussi d’agir en tant que participante à part entière et à jouer un rôle actif dans le processus d’intervention.

Un des films, The Interventionists, documente la collaboration de Cizek avec le Toronto’s Mental Health Crisis Team avec qui elle a passé plus de 80 heures à tourner des images documentaires de type cinéma vérité en accompagnant un policier et une infirmière de l’unité psychiatrique lors d’appels 911 ayant trait à des cas de détresse mentale ou de risques de suicide.  En utilisant la compassion, l’équipe conseillait les personnes en détresse afin de minimiser les situations problématiques et permettre à ceux qui se sentaient aliénés par le système hospitalier de rester dans leur communauté.  Depuis, le film a été projeté lors de la conférence du World Psychiatric Association et fait maintenant partie de l’entraînement des officiers des forces policières de Toronto.  Le film a aussi inspiré d’autres juridictions à adopter le modèle de partenariat entre la police et le personnel spécialisé en santé mentale.

Durant le processus, Cizek a écrit un manifeste détaillant les principes fondateurs qui influencent son travail.  Ce dernier a aussi joué un rôle important dans l’éducation des gens sur les formes de documentaires tout en communiquant cette approche comme étant une pratique légitime.  Elle explique : « Ça m’a aidé à expliquer ce que nous faisions. Le fait que nous expérimentions et innovions, tout en découvrant les préoccupations des gens et apprenions ensemble faisait partie du processus ».

Cizek mentionne aussi les précurseurs qui ont influencé son travail et le rôle que joue les nouveaux média et la technologie.  Elle affirme : « Nous sommes au cœur d’une énorme révolution numérique.  Seeing Is Believing documente la naissance des caméras vidéo compactes, une technologie qui a permis une certaine démocratisation en rendant cet outil accessible, ce qui a changé a jamais les média et le documentaire ».

Que réserve l’avenir pour Cizek?

L’influence de Filmmaker-in-Residence est évidente dans son prochain projet et sa dévotion constante aux trames narratives non-linéaires qui représentent mieux l’interaction humaine que les approches documentaires plus traditionnelles.  Son nouveau projet, Highrise, est un documentaire multimédia étalé sur plusieurs années se penchant sur l’expérience humaine dans les banlieues verticales globales et se basant sur les approches innovatrices, collaboratives et interventionnistes testées lors du premier projet, mais utilisées cette fois sur une bien plus grande échelle.  La bande-annonce nous informe qu’on nous présentera « dix tours de dix banlieues dans dix des villes mondiales ayant eu une croissance inattendue ».  Les histoires des gens vivant dans ces « contenants en béton de la vie urbaine » seront racontées en utilisant un principe collaboratif.  Lorsque j’ai parlé à Cizek de ce projet, sa passion pour celui-ci et pour les possibilités des nouvelles technologies prenait une grande place.  Elle note : « les longs métrages documentaires linéaires ont quelque chose de pas naturel.  Comment pouvons-nous raconter les histoires d’une manière plus semblable à comment nous communiquons? »  Elle parle de Out My Window, une partie du projet tourné à l’aide d’une nouvelle caméra et d’une technologie panoramique qui permettra d’inclure une vue de 360 degrés de certains étages de chaque gratte-ciel, représentant ainsi le point de vue des résidents, racontant leurs histoires alors que les spectateurs visionnent le tout de l’extérieur de leurs résidences.  Elle affirme : « Il y a une certaine humanité et une intimité; c’est émotionnel, mais respectueux.  C’est la manière dont nous communiquons. C’est comment nous en apprenons plus et comprenons les autres ».

Out My Window sera lancé au printemps 2010.  Les autres projets du documentaire multimédia Highrise sont en cours et sortiront au fur et à mesure qu’ils seront produits durant les prochaines années.
